Second, the best thing to learn from during this year in some subjects will be the projects you do, so try to start in those projects as early as possible to give each project enough time and innovate..

Third, what I am going to write next depends mostly on my knowledge and experience that might be outdated as I was in this place may be three years a go and it depends on my way of thinking and opinions.

So, lets see the subjects you do have in it

Automata, I did really love this subject, it has so many uses and it has some basic concepts for other subjects in fourth year, Computer Science department
just consider this subject as a mind teasers and you will enjoy it, you will learn how to construct basic computers that does at most one function using a concept called Turing machines,
you will learn about regular expressions, those regular expressions might help you in all your professional life in development, being a developer who can use regular expressions right is awesome!
I don’t think this subject contains projects but make sure you solve the assignments given to you or more, delivering the assignments is not what i mean, just solve them for your self to practice the concepts.

Numerical Computing, You are going to need the information taught in this course in all your life, you’ll be using it in Scientific Computing department, and if you wish to study post graduating you will need its concepts
also this subject doesn’t have projects but solving the assignments will help you practice as usual and will make you won’t need to even study for the final exams

Logical Programing, A nice subject with some cool concepts, a basic subject for other subjects in Computer Systems and Scientific Computing, mind tweaking and will introduce you to another way of thinking that is new for your mind, as you will be coding in another new language, I think it will be “Prolog”
As i remember this subject had a final year project, won’t be a tough one but you will have to practice the new way of thinking

to get ready for such concepts you have to think on how to solve problems using recursive functions only, get some problems you have already solved, summing an array, factorial or even more complicated problems, and try to solve them using any programming language you know but use only recursive functions..

Analysis and Design of Algorithms, This is one of the most important subjects in the whole four years in FCIS, and being an ACMer will help you so much in this subject, if you had a good deal of practicing in ACM problems you will find this course just organizing your mind and the solutions you already have
This subject will teach you how to solve a problem correctly and efficiently, how to utilize your resources and time and how to differentiate between solutions you do have for your problems to choose the most suitable..
This subject will have a final project, medium toughness, a nice project might be creating a GUI step by step visualizing how and algorithm work something like that or may be searching for an algorithm and trying to make it more efficient (and you might publish a paper for that )

getting ready for this subject can be in two ways, either solving ACM problems on http://uva.onlinejudge.org/
or reading the algorithms book, it is nice
The first solution is better for me but might take some time, the second is fine but will be a bit theoretical, if you combine both solutions that would be awesome, read about an algorithm and find a problem to solve it using this algorithm on UVA, UVA does categorize the problems..

Software Engineering, I really loved this subject, you will need it in your professional life intensively if you wish to work as a software engineer not as a programmer,
just take care of the concepts there and understand them well, believe me they will help you get organized when dong any project..
It is basic for some other subjects in Information Systems department
This subject has a project, you will code but that’s what is not intended for the project, the most important is the pre-coding preparations and designs

you might need to read the book, I loved it..

frankly I can’t remember whether that was the course that has Oracle as the practical part of it or not but if it is, then you have to get ready by preparing a Windows CD and a thick mouse pad, as you are going to install windows so many times to get Oracle environment working properly on it, and the mouse pad is to bang your head when it doesn’t work

I don’t actually know how friendly will be Oracle on Ubuntu as I was still on windows by that time and it was the very opposite to friendly…

Assembly Language, An important subjects with very needed information, mastering those concepts you might call yourself a hacker rather than a developer, this may be a good base for Computer Systems and Computer Science departments, and you need to understand as much as you can what is done when you write your code..
You will need it in third year for the second term as well
mmm this subject has a final project, an easy one but you can make it as tough and as complicated as you wish..

getting ready for this subject is also reading the book..

one last thing, do not rely on your doctors and TAs to teach you, that is mainly your role, what you do aim from you doctors is to give you highlights and topic heads and from your TAs is either how to use the tools or a practical explanation for the topics, of course if you find them give you more enjoy it, but do not rely on them to learn, you can do more far than they can push you..

Doing some worthless donkey work

I don’t know what made me much encouraged to try the job in this post

as you can see, even the title is not related, but i found myself attracted to that job..

So…

the first year is about to end, my pre-masters year is ending though

gotta say i did enjoy it, enjoyed learning and teaching, really enjoyed being useful

enjoyed being a colleague for such awesome TAs

about the pre-masters, most of the subjects where just time-wasting, some where useful but not quit the time having them or even related to what I should care for

and to some point I don’t care..

about me teaching,

I won’t claim that I was even good, but I have the excuse of being newly hired for such job, and I will try to improve myself as much as I can, that’s why I chose to teach subjects I am relatively good at, to be learning how to teach more than learning the subject itself, and to compromise the time wasted in my worthless lectures..

so I assume to have the chance for further improvement in the future after finishing my pre-masters year.

Although this year I had got my lovely bike, where I use it to go wherever I want including the college, some liked the idea, some didn’t

actually I could see some students smiling/laughing on seeing me riding the bike, and once again, I don’t care

I would really love to see this idea spread, which I am noticing it is, I’ve seen a good number of cyclers in the streets in Cairo and Alexandria

And I hope to have a bicycles park in the college or the university then to be spread everywhere else, but it needs some others to come with their bicycles, not only me

Again I’d really love to see this idea spread, specially in the university

About me being a government employee, I did enjoy laughing on seeing how stupid, worthless and time-wasting the regulations and rules are..

And how programmed the old employees are, and how much your smile pisses them off!!

one last thing, being a teaching assistant made me able to see students types, and see my friends and my self in them, and how much I wanted to tell my-student-self just shut-up and listen!

what I hope for next year is to improve my teaching ability and participate in activities, specially my beloved ACM chapter, acmASCIS

actually i had this idea in mind and wanted to start it later on, but why not now, lets get some experience till the time i wanted to start it..

and since I had got my camera just yesterday, so I will start the project yesterday, I got a picture while testing it and it’s modes and found it a bit related…

Nearly two years have  passed since my move to Ubuntu

gotta say, It’s an interesting BSOD-less experience

Of course I won’t claim it’s perfectly stable but for me it’s way more stable than windows.

kind of I had some problems most are solved, others needed workarounds, but mostly what i need to do is done at the end thanks to ALLAH

The continues problem was that my surrounding colleagues are not Ubuntu familiar/users and I’m working on that problem right now ;D

Anyway, I’ll list now the apps I found useful during those 2 years and I use them frequently.

Chromium

The Ubuntu version of Google Chrome, I’ve been with this browser since it was a piece of crap software, I used Firefox by that time but now it’s the best from my point of View

Hotot

The best twitter client I’ve ever used!

I can use the term that is always used in the review, It’s a sexy twitter client, try it and you won’t regret

Pidgin

I just love that client!!

It’s not perfect but I just love it, there is a trend to replace it with empathy but i don’t think i’ll take that step at least for now,

It supports all the account I can use to IM, even it has a plugin for twitter and was the first client i think that added support for facebook chat even before facebook enabled XMPP

the main advantage for it over empathy is that it has soo many plugins that does cool and even crazy things

Evolution

I’ve been using mail clients rather than the web interfaces for many years now, Evolution is very nice, it just needs some improvements in its interface and to support Microsoft exchange server 2007, coz I need it in my work and OWA sucks an enormous deal

but as a functionality it is superb!

VirtualBox

for me it’s enough..

it can load the images it produce and VMware images, its seamless mode is good, where I can see the Windows windows as if they are run on my host machine,

yeah, I admit I needed windows to compile some old projects I created in .NET

of course disk images not pics

RDesktop

well, having my job to be working on a windows machine, -a remote one Thanx Allah – so I needed a client to make me able to connect to it, so rdesktop was the first I’ve found and later -after a year of using it – I’ve found a very nice feature in it which is a seamless integration with the remote machine to have something like this

so as you can see, I can open any single application from my remote machine seamlessly on my local one, it just needs a small exe to be put on the remote windows machine.

A small problem is that something wrong happens when I remote connect on another session of somebody logged on the remote machine where his local machine is Windows 7, he is always kicked out of his session -COOL – and the same happens when he remote control mine also -of course here also he is the one who is kicked out, I’m Ubuntu, I’m stable -

Gnome-Do

I just adore this application!

I use it to do a lot of things

change my status in pidgin (in all my accounts there)

run applications

convert URLs to tiny ones

start a conversation on pidgin

open files from the machine

and more, I just get lazy to get used to other features, ah and there is a plugin where I can tweet also from it, just I have to press the quick-lunch button and write whatever I want even my messenger PM!!

Minbar

this app notifies me with the prayer times with the Ubuntu notification system, so it looks cool rather than having each application has its own notification.

RedShift

Although I couldn’t get convinced with that application in the first place, but after that I respected it, this application changes the color of the computer screen according to the time of the day, to not have the screen very bright when the lights are low to not hurt you eyes

And of course you can toggle it whenever you want with a couple of clicks..

Ubuntu Tweak

this application does so many things I get lazy to know about them, but it just rocks

BleachBit

This application frees used disk space with unwanted apps and temp files and so, and it frees in terms of GBs

BTW, I am still working on an Ubuntu install for may be a year and a half without formating my root volume which is 19GB where right now I have 4GB free space

without freeing anything and chrome is set to directly download to it..

Glippy Clipboard Manager

As you can read its name is a clipboard manager, a very useful tool for a developer to keep the history of his clipboard to not keep copying and pasting the same item more than a time, click the upper link for more info.

I think those are the most frequent tools I use daily on my Ubuntu machine that keeps me happy with it

Anyway, I’m glad to announce the release a special version of my lovely project “acmASCIS Submitter“

This version is customized for my faculty to help in the “Introduction to Algorithms” course, as there are some assignments containing problems to be solved on the UVA ACM judge

All what is added to this version is a form and a couple of buttons with some functionalities

The upper button “Student Info.” launches the following form to fill in the student info

So that after the student submits the problem to UVA a confirmation dialog will pop-up to the student asking if to submit this answer to FCIS TAs (Teaching Assistants) or not.

If the “Yes” button is clicked the answer will be submitted instantaneously, else it will be saved

The second button “Send TAs” will send the LAST problem submitted to FCIS TAs

1-Facebook

having friends on Facebook is like being with them in a huge playground watching what are they doing and may be watching how they are interacting with each other and may be I go poke him or tell him a comment about something he has done, the main difference between this and being with him in the real world that I can more often tell him that I’ve “liked” something he has done or some news he has shared.

2-Twitter

Following some people (tweeps) on Twitter is like creating intersection points between your daily circles of life, where you can see his comments on something he has experienced or his opinion about anything while you are there listening to his time line, Twitter interaction might be less often than Facebook but sometimes it’s a bit more realtime interaction depending on how addict is your tweep

3-Google BUZZ

It’s a place where you can find what you have missed about some one’s tweets, may be Facebook shares, diggs or reddits and google reader shares, so it’s the place to gather all info of all sorts but still I think it needs some time.

4-Google Wave

It’s a place where you can rarely see some body there

5-Messengers (MSN, Yahoo, GTalk…etc)

A place  where you can find somebody when you need him at the moment, of course he might not be there now, but you can wait for a while, or try to send him an offline message to see whether he is hiding or not (invisible or something from that crap)

6-Sitting next to your desk

Now I assume that every one around the world has seen what happened in Gaza in the freedom day (Monday 31/5/2010)

for you who didn’t see or even know what and where is Gaza

Gaza is an Arabian/Palestinian city that is located here

The residences of this city have been imprisoned there for years, no food or medical supplies, no money or industrial resources even no healthy water to drink, and all of that because the chose to defend themselves against occupation.

and that has been happening unfortunately under the supervision of all the governments, the governments who just care about politics, money and their own personal benefits.

Actually I’m very sad to say that I’m in the country next to them, that it’s government didn’t care or help, I didn’t choose/want this government anyway.

And I hope this blog post does anything for them.

So, on Monday 31/5/2010 a group of world free people from all over the world (Turkey, The United States, Britain, Australia, Greece, Canada, Malaysia, Algeria, Serbia, Belgium, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Germany, Kuwait, Egypt,..)

decided to break that siege on Gaza, not by weapons but by supplying people in Gaza by a tiny portion of what they needed, so they prepared more than 5 ships “on their own” and sailed on those ships towards Gaza

those ships had wheel chairs for people who had some disabilities resulted from the continues raids performed against them regularly in a daily basis

also had food and medical supplies…

But. those ships were intercepted and attacked in a piracy action from the Israeli forces “while it was still in the international waters”, those ships  was not going to pass in their local waters anyway…

Those ships were attacked by a full trained and full-armed commandos forces dropped by choppers against those who were on board of those ships during the night !!!

and those people were shot using live weapons leading to +10 killed and +30 injured in the worst chaotic action ever  !!

another claim is that people on board were the ones who started the fight, ARE YOU KIDDING ME !!!

So, now after what those pirates have done, by killing and injuring those peaceful civilians they will try to spread their “I am sorry, I didn’t mean it” through all the “paid” media to try to convince the world that they where the good guys and all the countries every where are the terrorists, WE HAVE TO STOP THAT SHIT !

If you don’t even care for Gaza, the humanity or truth, just be fair so that someday somebody be fair with you when you need him.

Just deliver the message  those people died for..

They didn’t pay their lives for nothing !

the least thing you can do is share or tweet this post or anything that shows for those who don’t know about the massacre that happened.

else you can tweet with the #Gaza #Flotilla hash-tags, blog or even talk to a friend who don’t know or misunderstood the situation, use whatever powers you have and make sure it will sure have an effect somehow.
